Yes, firewall can be run on a server. You can use Config Server Firewall (CSF) for Linux based VPS as well as most Linux distributions. Other security features like login/intrusion/flood detections are there in addition to filtering packets, basic functionality of a firewall. It must be said that on Redhat 7 Linux system firewall is enabled by default. Firewall on a Redhat 7 Linux system runs as firewall daemon. Until and unless you are using it for testing purposes, there is no requirement for disabling the firewall on Redhat 7 Linux system. In case of Windows Vps servers, the Windows Firewall is needed to be enabled for protecting the firewall. If you are turning on the Windows firewall then you can follow 2 steps and they are:

#1 restart computer first, and

#2 Start the programs that are listed in exception list.
This firewall tracks a program’s traffic. In fact, you can block all unwanted traffic by including the concerned traffic in exception list.
To cut it short, it can be said that firewall can be run on any server, be it Linux or Windows.
