It is important that you take a backup all your files to prevent any possibilities of data loss due to some disasters or to recover same if your account is compromised. Taking a backup will ascertain you do not lose any of your applications and files. There are many ways you could backup your Linux VPS files.

One popular method is the file-level backup services. This allows you to backup filesystem level copying and transferring files to another location or device. You could do this with cp command. Use a removable device and copy files onto it and you could store the HDD elsewhere. Anothe3r alternative is the Rsync command with which you can also perform remote backups in addition to the local backups mentioned above.

You could also automate the backup process which will need some technical process and codings. There are tools such as Bacula, BackupPC, Duplicity etc. Which enable GPG encrypted backups in a secure manner.

The second backup alternative is the Block-level backups also called imaging which involves duplicating and restoring the entire devices. The process is faster and transfer volume is greater than the file backups. Versioning of data allows you to restore to a previous version as and when you wish.
